Reasons That Affect Rhinoplasty ( Nose Job ) Time
The extent of the changes being made to the nose. Minimal changes will generally take 1 to 1.5 hours. If there are more extensive changes taking place, then the surgery could last up to 3 to 4 hours.
The method of rhinoplasty being performed affects the time of whole surgery. There are 2 types of procedures in rhinoplasty. The first one is open Rhinoplasty and the other is closed Rhinoplasty. While both require cutting inside the nose, open surgeryrequires an extra cut on the outside where the nostrils join together.
The amount of grafting that needs to be done. If you are lengthening your nose or making it wider, you will probably need to have cartilage grafted in. The cartilage is taken from the nose, ears, or in some cases, a rib. This will add to the amount of time that the surgery will take.
Anesthesia During the Nose Job surgery
Rhinoplasty requires local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery and your surgeon’s preferences. Discuss with your doctor beforehand which kind of anesthesia is best in your case.
Local anesthesia with sedation
This type of anesthesia is usually used in an outpatient setting and is limited to a specific area of your body. Your doctor injects a pain-numbing medication into your nasal tissues and sedates you with medication injected through an intravenous (IV) line. This makes you groggy but not fully asleep.
You receive the drug (anesthetic) by inhaling it or through an IV line — a small tube placed in a vein in your hand, neck or chest. General anesthesia affects your entire body and induces a temporary state of unconsciousness. General anesthesia requires a breathing tube.
The amount of time that the procedure takes also depends on the surgeon who is performing the procedure and how he or she operates, how efficient or what type of rhythm he or she has, whether he or she has a good team of nurses, anesthesiologist, etc. The team must work together well to do the job professionally, safely, and quickly.
